DIY: Simple Poinsettia Flowers
Not only are these flowers beautiful, but they are actually pretty simple to make. The finished product can be used as ornaments for a Christmas tree, in place of a bow on a Christmas gift or even adorning a bottle of wine or a box of baked goodies for a hostess gift.
The technique used for making these flowers is known as quilling or paper filigree. It's an intricate art form that dates back over 500 years. Quilling originated in European religious orders where they used strips of paper resembling metal filigree in their reliquaries. The pieces are created by rolling narrow strips of paper into various shapes, and arranging them together to form a unique design. Although quilling appears delicate and ornate, it is amazingly sturdy (but of course you'll still want to be kind of careful with the finished product).

To make each flower you will need 11 strips of paper (7 of the petal color and 4 for the leaves) approximately 17 inches long, 3 gold shaded beads, white glue and a quilling tool. If you don't have a quilling tool handy a tooth pick or straight pin would work just as well, but be careful not to poke yourself. I find that widths of paper between 1/8 - 3/4 of an inch would work best for this project, but you can experiment and see what works best for you (legal sized paper sheets cut the long way work well). |
